Partner Spotlight: The Campaign Against Hunger

Q. Why is it so important to connect food security with sustainable agriculture in a tangible way for young people?
A. Integrating sustainable agriculture into our youth programs is vital for cultivating an understanding of where food comes from and the impact of our food choices on the environment. By engaging young people in growing produce sustainably, we're not just addressing immediate food insecurity; we're actively combating food apartheid. Empowering them with the skills and knowledge to sustain these solutions long-term helps instill a sense of responsibility and connection to their community and the planet. This hands-on approach fosters an equitable food system, where access to nutritious, affordable food is a right for all, not a privilege for few.

Q. Your philosophy is that lasting change is only possible through strong partnerships. What lasting change do you hope will arise as a result of the partnership between Runway Green and the Campaign Against Hunger?
A. Our partnership with Runway Green aims to establish a scalable, community-driven model for sustainable, resilient food systems while providing pathways for high schoolers to earn credentials in the burgeoning green sector industry. We anticipate building robust local food networks that address community needs, minimize food waste, and offer training in urban farming. By merging our resources and expertise, we hope to foster a sustainable workforce, setting a standard for how communities can collaboratively tackle hunger and enhance environmental stewardship.

Q. For you, why are climate and sustainability interconnected with food security?
A. Climate change poses a direct threat to food production and distribution systems globally, impacting food security at every level. Sustainable practices in agriculture can mitigate some of these impacts by reducing carbon footprints, conserving water, and improving soil health. By prioritizing sustainability in our food programs, we address immediate hunger needs and contribute to the environment's long-term health, ensuring that communities remain resilient in the face of climate challenges.

Q. What is a moment you remember witnessing a young person realize the power of their own voice—and the impact they can have on our world and communities?
A. A particularly memorable moment occurred at TCAH's Planter Awards Gala in June, featuring Matthew McQueen. He spoke about his transformation from a teenager facing uncertainty in a household nearly losing electricity to thriving as part of our Green Teens Workforce. Now employed as a Farm Assistant, Matthew shared his experiences that night while dining with Brooklyn Borough President Antonio Reynoso, vividly illustrating the profound impact of finding one's voice and agency in the world.

Q. If you could describe what Runway Green and this partnership will bring to New Yorkers in three words, what would they be?
 A. Resilience, Community, Sustainability.

Q. What is one job in the climate and sustainability sectors that you want more young people to know about?
A. Urban Agriculture Specialist. This role combines knowledge of sustainable farming techniques with the unique challenges of urban settings. Specialists in this expanding field are crucial for developing innovative solutions to grow food in limited spaces, using fewer resources, and reducing cities' carbon footprint. It’s a career that supports community health, combats food deserts, and promotes biodiversity within urban environments.
